The first thing to be aware of is that we need several measurements over a period of time before we start to add medication for blood pressure.
I would suggest measuring again on 3 more occasions, ideally by a qualified health professional or a calibrated machine. There can be some variation with automatic blood pressure machines.
In terms of what you can do now to reduce blood pressure, cut salt out of your diet as much as possible. The daily limit is about 6g and you will get this in many processed foods. Cut out fries and potato chips as these are highly salty. Switch to fresh food with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
Reduce alcohol to less than 14 units for the week, and ideally have two days without any alcohol at all every week. Caffeine should also be reduced and if you are a smoker then stop this too.
If you do not exercise at all, then gradually build up to 30 minutes of brisk exercise daily
Lifestyle measures may be enough over the next couple of months to reduce blood pressure but we aim for at least 140/80 in a typical adult as a general guide. Some people have lower targets depending on other health problems.
Check that your weight is within ideal for your height as extra weight will put extra stress on blood pressure..
