I have been just recently getting dizzey and or lightheaded out of the blue. Everything will just fade out kind of get dark and then come back. It scares me and then I get nevous or anxious it will happen again. This started about a week ago and it's happened a few times but not everyday. What is the problem? The only medications I am taking are Tramadol and birthcontrol. I have been taking both for a year or more and this has never happened before.

It could be an inner ear infection or vertigo both of which will cause lightheadedness and dizziness.
Lightheadedness happens when there is not enough blood getting to the brain. This can happen if there is a sudden drop in your blood pressure or you are dehydrated from vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or other causes. Many people, especially as they get older, experience lightheadedness if they get up too quickly from a lying or seated position. Lightheadedness often accompanies the flu, common cold, or allergies.
The most common causes of vertigo are benign positional vertigo and labyrinthitis. Benign positional vertigo is vertigo that happens when you change the position of your head. Labyrinthitis usually follows a cold or flu and is caused by a viral infection of the inner ear. Meniere's disease is another common inner ear problem. It causes vertigo, loss of balance, and ringing in the ears.
It could even be possible you have a sinus infection which can cause dizziness as well.
I do suggest since you are on medication and do have a regular physician you contact them to see if you can have an examination to better search the cause of these symptoms as there can be many things other than ear infection or vertigo that can cause the symptoms you are having.
Your doctor will perform a physical exam, focusing on your heart, head, ears, and nervous system.
A website I find helpful is www.medlineplus.com
It has a medical dictionary and helpful tips on the cause of alot of symptoms. But your best bet for a sure determination is a thorough examination by your physician.
I hope this information help you.

Reply to cheryl kauffman's Post: I am going to go see my doctor as soon as possible. Is this something that could possibly related to the long term use of tramadol? I have read a lot about the drug and never heard of this and when I don't take it I still get light headed. Could this be a permenant side effect of this drug?

I agree with all that Cheryl has said above. I just want to say that Tramadol (Ultram) is known to cause dizziness in a third of the people taking it with increasing dizziness the longer it is taken. It also is know for causing seizure activity, even with recommended dosage but especially if taken at higher than recommended doses. I am not implying that is your case, autumn 34, but please be cautious.

Reply to BarbaraTaylor's Post: The other day while I was standing everything started fading dark kind of like black out and then came back. I Didnt pass out or even fall over. It happened very quickly and I was shakey afterwords but I think that was because I was freaked out by it. Is that considered lightheaded, dizzyness, or is it something else?

Thank you very much for your help. It has not happened in a few days. If it happens again I will go right to my doctor. If it continues to happen I have a feeling that it may be my blood sugar because I have a horrible sugary diet.
Thanks again!
