Question

Fatigue

Sent to Health Experts September 08, 2005 5:11 p.m.

I am 45 years old and I have been extremely fatigued for several months even though I get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. My doctor ran blood tests and everything came out fine, except my cholesterol was 241. I am tired all of the time. What other things could be causing my fatigue? I also have headaches above and behind my eyes and my ears always seem to get plugged.

It is possible you may have what is called "sleep apnea" Especially with you saying you sleep around 8 hr a night. Plus with your blood work turning up fine. Also headaches are a symptom of sleep apnea.

Here is a list of associated symptoms

  • Snoring with pauses in breathing (apnea)
  • Excess daytime sleepiness
  • Gasping or choking during sleep
  • Restless sleep
  • Problem with mental function
  • Poor judgment/can’t focus
  • Memory loss
  • Quick to anger
  • High blood pressure
  • Nighttime chest pain
  • Depression
  • Problem with excess weight
  • Large neck (>17” around in men, >16” around in women)
  • Airway crowding
  • Morning headaches
  • Sexual problems
  • Frequent trips to the bathroom at night

It doesn't mean you will have all the symptoms either.

Here is a site you can read more about it here..

http://www.lung.ca/sleepapnea/what/index.html

You can request your doctor to set up with a sleep study test which will give them the results if this may be what you are experiencing.

Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Is it possible that you're beginning to go through menopause? Please take a look at the following website for a long list of symptoms that a person may experience with menopause. (Includes the headaches & fatigue that you described) http://www.hormonecheck.com/Symptoms.htm

With that being said, there are many other things that could be the cause of your symptoms since fatigue & headaches are common complaints with many items. They range from a minor vitamin deficiency to depression and a whole host of more serious medical issues. It sounds like more evaluations/tests from your physician may be needed in order to narrow it all down a little more.

You know your body best. If your physician is not sure what the problem is, then you're going to need to press him/her for additional testing or referrals to other physicians that may have a better answer. This may involve visiting a chiropractor, having an MRI, etc. Keep in mind that you can always request a 2nd opinion from a new physician if you don't feel that you're getting adequate care from your current Dr.

Please let me know if I can be of additional assistance. I'm more then happy to help. Best wishes!

I had a complete hysterectomy when I was 22 years old. I do not take hormones because I have fiber cystic breast disease.

I have not been known to snore at night. I only get up maybe once a night to go to the bathroom. My blood pressure is very good. I have sexual problems, but I think that is because I had a complete hysterectomy when I was 22. I do have frequent headaches when I get up in the morning, and lately they have been persisting througout the day. I was worried that I had some kind of heart problem or sinus problem.
