my step daughter was diagnosed over 1 year ago as having Coxsackie virus. The dr prescribed medication to clear up this virus. She is 18 yrs old. Recently she has had four seperate passing out episodes, each time a little worse. Each begins with swelling of her lips and face, a rash on her face then she falls to the floor. The last two times she was taken by ambulance to the hospital. They gave her Benadryl and sent her home thinking it was an allergic reaction. Last night, she began to get a rash, her mother put a lotion of some kind on....she proceeded to bed, but in the hallway her brother saw her eyes roll back into her head and she feel to the floor. The ambulance was called. By the time they arrived she had began to come to twice but went back out both times. The paramedics said she had another black out in the ambulance....her face and lips were swollen, but this time her feet also swelled double her normal size and were very tight and blue, and she also lost control of her bowels in the form of diarrhea. They gave her ephedrine (?). Upon arrival at the hospital they took blood samples and sent her home a few hours later telling her to make a Dr appt. She has one tomorrow at 9. I am curious if the Coxsackie can have after effects like siezures or diabeties. I have never heard of the symptoms combined. We will not let her drive or leave her alone. The syptoms pass after about 1 hour. Please let me know what these symptoms could possibly be. Any ideas? She has no known allergies and nothing relates to each time.

Coxsackie virus, unless it causes something like polio or Hepatitis A, is self-limiting and has no long-term effects. Most often, they aren't even treated.

The second part of this reaction sounds very much like seizure activity. You might not notice any major movements; seizures can be as tiny as fluttering eyes or as large as a whole body in spasm.

Seizures can have many types of triggers, be they certain lights, sounds, emotions, video games, etc. She is having a reaction to something that is then triggering seizure activity, I believe. She needs to see her doctor, but an EEG and some allergy testing wouldn't be out of line.

Keep close track of her activities, what she eats, where she goes, games she plays, a diary of sorts, and that could help to locate the trigger. They just aren't always obvious.

The swollen lips and face are particularly suggestive of an allergic reaction to something. It could even be something that she has inhaled, it doesn't have to be eaten. This last reaction was particularly severe, and if her blood pressure dropped, as I suspect it did, the blood supply was being shut down to the extremeties in order to keep it going to her brain and other important organs.
