Question

two drugs at once

Sent to Health Experts August 02, 2006 6:20 p.m.

What will happen to a person ( that is in excellent health) if he or she takes Effexor and Ephedra at the same time, for instance a 10 or 25 mil. dose? I know your really not suppose to but what will happen? I know it's also illegal in some places but if you have some what will happen? Thank you Cathryn

Hello and Welcome to Just Answer.

Can you tell me has this person been taking these two medications? If so for how long?

Is there a reason why this person wants to take these two medications? If so, how many do they want to take?

I can better answer your questions, if you would answer the above questions.

Thank you,

I was just wondering if they had been on Effexor very long. I myself have been on effexor for about 5 years now. Do they seem to be doing ok with that medication? Are they wanting to take a diet pill over the counter with this? Something that contains ephedra?

I would appreciate your answers to help me better answer your question.

I have checked with the interactions of putting both together and there is not an interaction between the two. I tried this once and it made me nauseated and it gave me the shakes, so I never took one again. If you are going to do this, I would certainly watch the blood pressure because both medications tend to raise the blood pressure. Also, I am not going to really recommend it even if it says that there are no interactions. Both of these medications can really hype you up. If you want to try and see what happens, I would take a very low dose at first to see how it is going to react. People react differently to medications. If you have anymore questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I'm sorry but I still feel like I don't have enough info. yet, your doing good, I take it this is not what a phy. would advise? Did you say you took both of these specific meds. together yourself? I take 75 mil. of effexor and the phedra would be from 10 to 25.

The FDA banned supplements containing ephedra - one of the reasons was increases in blood pressure
http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2004/204_ephedra.html

Hypertension also occurs in 4% of people using Effexor XR (official package insert)
http://www.wyeth.com/content/ShowLabeling.asp?id=100

Ephedra is dangerous itself - and should not be used - in combination with another medication which has a tendency to increase blood pressure it could be DEADLY.

I would absolutely advise against this combination!

Hello,

Sorry I was gone for awhile. You could quit taking the effexor, but you would first have to wean yourself off of it. Going off of it cold turkey is very miserable. It is almost as bad as trying to get off of a narcotic. You will have sweating, nausea, extreme depression, abdominal pain, and so on. It is not very pretty, believe me, I have gotten off of effexor several times. But I think it would be ok if you first weaned off of the effexor and then took the ephedra. In my opinion ephedra is not very healthy for you. It has caused alot of heart problems in the past. If you wean off the effexor its going to take you at least 3 weeks minimum not to have any withdrawal effects. If you need to ask more questions. let me know, I will be here for awhile.

Thank you,
