I woke up this morning with a extreme redness (enlarged and dilated blood vessels) in my left eye. My vision is not affected and I did not even notice it until my daughter mentioned it. The only thing I notice is a slight stiffness in my eye. What can this be and how alarmed should I be?

Dear MMoran,

These red eyes can look frightening. I need a bit more info though to best advise you:

Your vision is not affected? That is good

Is the redness in one area, or all of the white red?

If you look in a mirror, do your pupils appear equal?

Is the redness a flare-like (like a blotch) and bright red?

Do you have any eye problems at all?

Your answers will help me advise you.

Reply to PaulaFNP's Post: Most of the white in red and yes, it is blochy. My pupils are equal in size and my right eye does not seem to be affected at all. The only eye problem I have noticed is that I seem to blink more and my left eye seems dryer.

Does it feel like you have something in the eye? Do you have any drainage? Does it hurt at all?
