What does left atrial enlargement mean?

My 17 year old brother was in the hospital very sick and the only thing the doctors could say that was wrong with him is that he had a very serious virus. At first they thought he was developing scarlet fever but they ruled that out. He was very dehydrated, low blood pressure, high fever, very dizzy and his tongue was very swollen (they called it stawberry tongue). He got well enough to be released from the hospital but is now complaining of being dizzy and his chest hurts. These symptoms have been affecting him for more than a week now. He is soon going to get an EKG because a chest x-ray shows he has a "left atrial enlargement". What does this mean exactly and how serious is this?
