Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

I am quite concerned by what you are telling me. While I dont know the exact cause of this (not enough information) we can discuss WHY people retain water and the possible implications of each reason.

The two most common causes of water retention are kidney failure and Congestive Heart Failure.

The kidneys help to filter wastes from the blood. If the kidneys are not working properly, they can neither filter these wastes nor can they excrete excess water. Fluids start to build up within the body, and can indeed cause swelling as you describe (generally in the lower extremities, and often accomapnies by nausea, confusion, headaches, muscle aches, weight loss, high blood presure, and decreased urine output). Kidney failure can be acute (happens suddenly), or chronic.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/kidney-failure/DS00280/DSECTION=2 (acute kidney failure)

The heart works to pump blood throughout the body. But, sometimes the heart cant pump effectively or with the force it needs to do so. When that occurs, blood pressure changes inside the body create conditions where the water balance changes, and the fluids from the veins go into the fluids in the tissue, resulting in swelling. This is called Congestive Heart Failure. Signs of this include weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue and weakness, swelling of extremities and abdomen. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/heart-failure/DS00061/DSECTION=2 (Web link on CHF).

I am concerned with this. IF this is a problem with your kidneys, you will have chemical imbalances within your blood as the toxins build up within it. That could cause abnormal heart rhythms that could be quite serious. You are having swelling on your face. That is always a concern because it could interfere and impact with your breathing. I am not comfortable knowing you want to wait til tomorrow to be seen. Neither CHF nor kidney failure are associated with FACIAL swelling, but they are the most common causes of water retention. I would seek an Urgent Care Clinic today if I were you, even consider the Emergency Room. IM VERY worried this swelling will get worse and make you, potentially unable to breathe.

Please feel better and good luck (and go to the Urgent Care or ER),

Sincerely,

Susan
