Ten days after delivering my 2nd child I developed ...

Sent to Health Experts November 30, 2007 1:12 p.m.

Ten days after delivering my 2nd child I developed hypertension or rather blood pressure fluctuations (120/80 day and 138/90 evenings). My pressure has always been low 110/60 and perfectly fine before during and pregnancy. I am very thin and active and have no other risk factors for high blood pressure. No protein in my urine to indicate preeclampsia and blood work came back normal. From the little information I can find no one knows what causes this or really how to treat. I am trying to find a doctor who has seen this to hopefully know what to do to correct. Has anyone seen this and know how to treat/cause?

Optional Information:
Female, Age: 32, Texas

Already Tried:
Seen primary doctor who has never seen this before

Hello,

A normal reading is 120/80, and I understand that your BP usually runs lower than that.

Is your doctor considering this high blood pressure?

Are you taking your BP at home in the evenings? and why?

Are you having other symptoms such as headaches or blurred vision?

Thanks,,Terry

She is considering it to be high because even 120/80 is high for me, but mainly the higher readings is what she is concerned with. I am monitoring my bp at home because I have occasional spikes where it is in the 150s/high 90s-100 and I just want to get a grip on what it's doing. Some headaches but wouldn't say blurred vision as much as maybe changes in my eyesight since before pregnancy.

Hi again,

Are you breast feeding your baby?

Did the doctor put you on medication for hypertension?

It's curious as to why you were checking your blood pressure to begin with. 120/80 is within normal range. 140/90 is considered high 'normal'.

Hypertension is diagnosed when there are three consecutive high readings. Yours has fluctuated and not maintained high. Are you more stressed in the evening, or maybe the anticipation of taking your BP is making you nervous. Is the baby sleeping well.? Your body has gone through a major transition, hormonally and physically . You can be medically evaluated by a cardiologist.

I hope you found my answer helpful.

Terry

I started taking my pressure because 10 days post partum I had to go back to L&D because of 102 degree fever. They checked for infection however did not find anything pertaining to pregnancy. While there of course they monitor your vitals and I was up at 160/105. They said it was prob due to fever. However still weeks after and fever gone it would still be up to 150/100. These bp spikes after pregnancy are rare but it does happen and evidently doctors don't know how to treat or what causes.
