Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),
There are a few ways to get suggestions from the ultrasound regarding the mass on the ovary. Cancerous tumors and cysts are both masses that can grow on the ovary but appear different. One of the ways to look at the ultrasound is the density of the mass, tumors from cancer are more dense because it is all tissue, cysts are mostly fluid filled. They also appear differently in terms of how "bright" they are which is another way for the radiologist to differentiate. Finally there are lab tests that your doctor can order that can point in one way or the other, such as CA -125 level which if elevated is more suggestive of Cancer (although doesn't make or break the diagnosis). Your doctor can use all of these in addition to a good history and physical exam to get an overall impression, but the gold standard for diagnosis is a biopsy. they may bring you back for a transvaginal ultrasound which is much better than an abdominal ultrasound.
Hope this helps and good luck,
Dr. J
