i was diagnosed with breast cancer in december of 2006. I had doiuble masectomies with various complications, done chemotherapy and had a rediagnosis in november of 2007. radiation completed in mid january of 2008. i have now gotten a pleural effusion and had 1.5 liters drained. O2 sats on room air are 88%. it has been 3 days since the thoracentesis and everything in normal in the blood work up except i have not received the cytology report yet. the docs are pushing for a pleurodesis asap. isn''t there a way the body can reabsorb the fluid if a few days pass. the docs told me i have new build up but won''t explain or let me see the x-rays. i am also a nurse and very nosy so i research everything i can before any surgery.

The docs here have already told me about what you wrote. I want to know if it is better to wait for cytology. Why are they pushing hard to get this done asap?

I think they want to prevent recurrence of effusion . The fluid may be already refilling & they want to avoid a big effusion. They may have decided this based on the clinical picture & x-ray appearance.

I would suggest you discuss with your docs & clarify the reason why they are insisting. I have given my best guess on that.
