I am sorry to hear of your mother's diagnosis.

There are many factors involved. Her age, overall physical condition, any other contributing medical conditions, the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer and her overall psychological status, does she have a positive outlook, does she want treatment?

An average amount of time could be three months to ayear.

Reply to Deborah's Post: i'm sorry, i should have given more info. she started an oral chemo a month ago. it did not work. at that time it was only in her stomach and liver but this latest cat scan showed the tumor grew in size in her stomach and is now spotting in her lungs..she's 75, diabetic, around 100 lbs and not in great health otherwise..i would think at this point her outlook isn't wonderful..i doubt the three months to a year average time is not prabable here. i was just trying to get some guage of time from since i have to leave the part of the country where i live to go home to help out and was trying to have idea in my mind as to how long i'd be gone..it's metastatic stomach cancer, as a i mentioned. i'm not sure waht stage but it was found in january of this year, though probably already existed. at that time, it had already moved to here liver and now a bit in her lungs..any realistic thoughts based on its spread? i've heard that once things spread to the lung area, that a month or 6 weeks at best is the number?

I am so sorry that you have to go through this, the loss of a parent is so hard.

Based on what you told me, I have to agree with you that my original estimate was more in line with someone who's health was a bit better.

These things are hard to predict, but I would venture to say six weeks is more in line.

At this point I would discuss with her doctor if he feels Hospice would be appropriate. Here is some info related to Hospice and ask your doctor who he recommends:
