it is my husband - We went to the doctor on Monday and they just said they were going to do an X-ray and blood work. The X-ray looked fine, so they sent us to get the CT scans yesterday - When they did the CT scans they found that his liver, spleen, and lymph-nodes were enlarged - Now they want us to go to a hemotologist today - he won't tell me what this could be, just that there are several possibilities and they are trying to rule them out one by one

You must be very concerned and frustrated, and I'm sorry that your husband hasn't been feeling well. Today, at your hematologist's appointment, I am sure that you will get many more answers.

From your description, there are a few possibilities. One possibility is a viral infection, like infectious mononucleosis. This can cause fever, sweats, fatigue, and enlargement of these lymph nodes (there are many lymph nodes within the liver and spleen, and that might be the cause of these organ's enlargement, as well) among other symptoms.

Another possibility that might be more likely here is Hodgkin's disease, which is a type of lymphoma, or a cancer of the lymph nodes and lymphatic system. Hodgkin's is most common in people who are young, and involves enlargement of lymph nodes in different locations throughout the body, including in the liver and spleen. Many people with Hodgkin's can also experience other symtpoms that you have mentioned, including weight loss, and night sweats.

I think that these are the two most likely suspects, from the information that you have provided. The good news about Hodgkin's, if that is what it is, is that it is one of the easiest forms of cancer to treat and cure, with rates as high as 85%. Treatment can involve chemotherapy and radiation, but since there are many different types of Hodgkin's (and these different types can potentially be treated differently) this treatment can vary. But in most cases, it is very responsive to treatment. So this is encouraging.

I am enclosing links to a few web sites that might be of some interest to you, and that might help explain things a bit.

I that this is some tough information to digest - the possibility of lymphoma as a diagnosis can be very hard to take. But try and remain encouraged, as if it is Hodgkin's, it can very often be treated and cured. Take a look at these resources, and prepare questions for the hematologist. I, of course, am available as well if you have any questions, at all.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need help with anything else - I'm more than happy to try and be of some assistance. Take care - Dr. Fay
