My boyfriend has rectal colon cancer and he says it is in ...

My boyfriend has rectal colon cancer and he says it is in stage 4, I don't understand how advanced that is and how many stages are there?
How serious is this? What are the treatments that he will go thru with it being inthis stage, and how deadly is it? Is it curable?
He won't talk about this but I need to understand, please help..
