Question

I have been experiencing a problem with defecation. When ...

Sent to Health Experts October 02, 2006 7:35 p.m.

I have been experiencing a problem with defecation. When my stools are hard, and I have to strain, I find that the stool appears to exit from another opening. I find stool up the back of my of my 'butt crack'. When my stools are softer, and I'm not straining this isn't an issue. I have started taking a stool softener to keep it from reoccuring. I am concerned that there may be some kind of tear which is making this happen. I researched anal fissures on the internet, but I am not experiencing any unusual pain. What might this be?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 53

Already Tried:
stool softener, laxatives

If you are not having pain, I would be confident that you do not have a fissure - these are usually very painful. If you have ever had a crack in the corner of your mouth - you know how they can be so sore. A fissure is along the same thing.

You may have some internal hemorrhoids (external hemorrhoids are usually painful, internal hemorrhoid tend not to be painful). Somepeople get irritation, itching or a general "ache" -and other get bright red rectal bleeding.

You are over the magic age of 50, when we recommend routine colonoscopy screening. With having a symptom (constipation), you now have a second reason.

During the colonoscopy, they could find out if there is any cause for the constipation (narrowing for example), they can make sure there isn't any fissure/hemorrhoids that need attention, AND bonus - screen for cancer and the pre-cancerous polyp. ( know, I think I heard the "Why me?", through the computer)

Here are the current ACS Screening recommendations. (While I'm on the subject, did you get your mammogram?)

I agree with the stool softner, also increasing fluid intake will help, and increasing fiber in the diet

Thanks, its good to know I'm on the right track with the stool softener. Constipation is a fact of life with me, my calcium channel blocker is the culprit I think.

Can I put off the colonoscopy for a couple of months? I just started a new job and need (A) for the insurance to kick in and (B) to be able to take time off (not wise in your first few months of employement.)

I DO have regular mammograms, as I've lost too many friends and family to breast cancer to be cavalier about that procedure. Thanks for asking though.
