Question

My mother has gastric cancer, not being treated. Some ...

Sent to Health Experts November 29, 2006 6:22 p.m.

My mother has gastric cancer, not being treated. Some days, she has massive bowel movements, some days constipation and her rectum hurts when this happens. When she told her doc about the massive bowel movements, she said to take Imodium. She hadn't taken it as yet, but today my father read all the "warnings", and he was afraid to give it to her.........any comments on this? Also, are these huge bowel movements having to do with her condition ( and the constipation ) YES YES, she drinks LOTS of water..she is getting tired of me asking if she is drinking it! Her doc isn't available to ask these questions..so would appreciate it.

When you say "massive", are you talking about loose bowel movements, or a large quantity of bowel movement, or is it a large, loose quantity of bowel movement.

metanx, aricept, natal care, glyburid ( very low dosages )
By the way, my mother is 88, she is a diebetic...she is not on insulin...her sugar is very good...she doesn't touch candy, donuts, any sweets, she eats mostly a high protein diet..very rarely has potatoe, rice and has oatmeal a few times a week if any...etc...I think you get the picture. She weighs 122 lbs. I was very upset with your post above about "not taking the Imodium" because she could get a bowel blockage...so would this say her doc doesn't know what she is doing? I called my mother and found out my father bought Ibroprophen! NOT Imodium...and I was relieved. As for my father "being right", he lead me to believe he was reading from the IMODIUM package...but it was the Ibroprophen....
So based on this info, now what would you have to say? I'm trying to find out if these bowels movements are from having the gastric cancer or not, and something she just has to deal with.

I appreciate your response...and it helps me understand even more...my mother just had a PET SCAN yesterday...so we will find out if it has spread from the stomach...we can only pray...but she refuses surgery...and I personally have been studying holistic and natural ways...so I understand about the psyllium idea. She had a colonoscopy and all was well...I do know part of the esophagas? and the spleen had "lesians"....my mother is in a weakened condition, before even being diagnosed (July 2006) she wasn't doing household duties at all, she doesn't cook, clean, nothing. We are hoping to hear the results of the PET SCAN soon. Oh, and I thought she wouldn't be able to eat if there was blockage ( God forbid! ).....she has an appetite and eats quite well. If you can address anything I said in here, I will then pay you. God Bless you

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Partial blockages act the way her bowel symptoms are - constipation alternating with diarrhea. That is why I am so concerned. That's also why it is important to check with the doctor about the psyllium. The good thing about psyllium is it absorbs fluid in the large bowel - so I am glad to hear that her colonoscopy was good. Now we just have to worry about the small intestines.

I realized she was in a weakened condition when you told me she was 122 lbs. That is not a "fighting weight" for someone who has stomach cancer.

You are a terrific daughter. God bless you and your dad too!
