I noticed a few days ago that the shin of my left leg was touchy,as if I had bumped it.This morning I noticed a lump,or bump on it.Its tender to the touch, but obviously discolored. Is this serious enough to schedule a visit to my doctor, and if so,how urgent would that visit be?

2.I feel fine,but I am a cancer(kidney)survivor.
3.Yes,I take atenolol,avodart and Doxasosin.

I meant to type "not" obviously discolored.I tripped & fell about 9 days ago and landed on my knees, but honestly dont recall whether I hit the shin or not.

If you are have taken any form of immunosuppressant such as steroids or have had chemotherapy this last year, then I would play safe and seek medical care faster than perhaps in other circumstances.

I would be worried about possible infection, although you say that there is no noticeable change in temperature.

So if we exclude that, then the recent history of trauma would indicate that this may be a reactive hematoma or seratoma. So possibly a referred injury from the fall, or fluid slipping down the fascia of the shin from the knee may be the cause of this bump.

If you are able to bear weight normally on this leg, there is no residual pain and there is no restriction to movement when bending or stretching the knee then a visit to the doctor is less urgent. However with your history of kidney cancer, then your bones may be weaker than others and I would want this looked at. So I would ring your doctor and explain the circumstances and see whether he wants to see your before the weekend, or wait till Monday. Ideally as well as a physical examination, then an x ray or CT scan would show exactly what was happening, but these might be unnecessary once your doctor has looked at it.

I am sorry not to be more specific but this could be a number of things, ranging from a simple bruise to a possible infection or fracture.

Regards

I think it's pretty much in the center, where the fracture is shown in the picture.Thank you for the extra time you've spent with me.I guess my only real concern is this.Could it be a malignant tumor, and I realize that you cant possibly diagnose that.

Thank you for accepting, malignant tumor is a concern and that is why I like to play safe to get it checked out. If you had a fracture then a cancer could have weakened the bone, but only a bone scan or x ray would confirm this.

Because you didn't have chemotherapy then metastatic disease is a possibility but that also depends on the grade of the kidney cancer at diagnosis. We could be worrying unnecessarily, but it needs to be ruled out.

Best wishes

Reply to Pauline's Post: Chemo is not used for the treatment of kidney cancer in the US.They simply remove it and by blood tests,CAT scans, and X-rays monitor my condition.I'm less than a year away from being considered "cured" thus needing no further tests.
BRW Pauline,I lived in London for 3 years during the 60s and loved it.Greatest city in the world.
