This may be a sign that menopause is approaching. It could also be caused by uterine fibroids (fibrous tumors that grow in and/or on the uterus). These should show in the ultrasound results. These may be removed in many cases.

Some treatment options for DUB include:

Hormonal replacements (birth control pills). These usually regulate the period-shortening and lessening the flow
Hormonal blockers, such as a Lupron shot

Lastly, a hysterectomy may be performed. This is usually considered a last option because it is much more invasive and carries more risks than the other options.

Once the ultrasound results come back, you will be able to discuss all of your options with your doctor. Make sure that s/he is able to discuss with you the risks and benefits of each so that you can make an informed decision.
