My husband has had stage 4 prostate cancer for almost 2 ...

Sent to Health Experts November 03, 2007 8:36 p.m.

My husband has had stage 4 prostate cancer for almost 2 years. Recently he's had edema in his feet & legs, but it went away after a couple of days with his feet elevated above his heart. My question is in regards to his stomach/abdominal area which is swollen from a 38" waist to a 46" waist over the past 3 days! He looks like he might explode. What can I do to make this the swelling go away? He has already been taking hydrochlorizide, but it's not helpin at all. My name is Rosi & live in rural Arizona.

He says he feels the worst he's ever felt in his life, he will be 63 on Christmas day this year. He also has has a lot of sinus drainage lately from his allergies, he is allergic to just about everything. He's been on Dr. Pfeifers protocal with prostasol, curcumin and biobran. And he's been receiving Lupron shots every 4 months. Recently refilled his Casodex prescription. He looks like he's pregnant. He has gained about 8 lbs. recently. Does that help you?

AZ,

He sounds like he's feeling terrible. Unfortunately, the Casodex could be making his edema worse. If he has gained all this weight in a very short time, I think he really should call someone, either his Urologist or the doctor who prescribed the HCTZ.

There are much stronger medications for edema than HCTZ that can be prescribed. Also, his Urologist really should be informed of the edema; there may be some other medication he can prescribe as well. Incidentally, Lupron can cause edema as well.

Finally, if he hasn't had an echocardiogram of his heart in the last year or so, I'd recommend this too. You just want to make sure that all this swelling is not from heart failure.
