JUly 2006 Dr. found 8centimeter mass in rectal area, a little more than finger length in. I had 2 months of radiation and chemo. I then had surgery in Nov. 2006 and they removed all that was left plus several lymphs that were involved. They said it was almost thru the bowel wall but had not attached anywhere else. I then had another 6 month round of chemo, F5U Lucevoren and a course of avastin . I finished my treatment in July 2007. All the time I have been complaining of leg pain. Down my leg bone pain. Also have been having terrible pain up under my ribs, takes my breath awy, went to er and they said I had a uti. I went to my oncologist last week He took blood, and then called me and said, my cea level was a 1.something last Nov. and it is 11.something now. He ordera cat scan . I have that soon. I want to know what this could mean. Is my cancer back or a new one is in there. please, I am so frightened. Thank You

Greetings,

The bone pain that you are having and the slight rise in your CEA is concerning and should be worked up as your oncologist is recommending. A recurrence of the cancer (with spread to the bones) is the first thing that must absolutely be ruled out and a CT scan is a good way to start. Another thing that they must have thought about and ruled out is a DVT (deep vein thrombus) in the leg with pulmonary embolism which happens quite frequently in patients with a history of GI cancer.

It souds like your oncologist is doing the appropriate work-up and I would follow his advice.

Sincerely,

Dr.Bernon
