Sent to Health Experts April 25, 2006 6:35 p.m.

For the past few weeks I have had on and off dull pain in my right chest area (seemed like the lung area). Yesterday the pain moved to my front/top right shoulder. It is now a sharp stabbing pain when I move my arm and have not injured myself. The pain just moved there. It is tender to touch the area and has gotten worse throughout the day. What could this be? Could I possibly have a virus that has moved from one area and now in my shoulder? It feels very sore now. I am 47yo female.

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 4

Already Tried:
just trying not to use my right arm so much because my shoulder really hurts mostly when i adduct

Has anything changed the quality or consistency for the better or worse?

Do you have a temp, or any other symptoms/concerns?

Have you tried any treatment such as ibuprofen, or ice/heat?

Have you had any cough, cold, URI, recently?

I have a GP that I consult with on certain questions and in patient research. I plan to consult with him on this question since you are also a Nurse, and have an understanding of the Nursing point of view on this question.

Thanks for getting back. I don't have a temp. I have had what I think are just hot flashed now and then (given my age that's appropriate) and I don't think these are related in any way to my shoulder pain. I have taken motrin for the pain, but am concerned and want to narrow down what this might be. I am busy and hesitate to just "run" to the clinic or doctor for something that might just go away. What do you think though about having pain in my chest then moving to my shoulder. It is still really sore - even when I am typing this I can feel the pain.

Pleurisy is one serious concern. Pleurisy is an inflammation of the lining of the lungs causing pain usually felt first in the right anterior chest wall. The pain may then spread or may be completely reffered to the shoulder or back.   The pain is usually sharp and worse with breath and movement. The pain results from the inflammation and friction of pleural surfaces. It generally starts in the right anterior chest wall, over the site of the inflammation.

If a large amount of fluid accumulates, it may separate the pleural layers, so the chest pain disappears, leaving only the shoulder pain.

The course of pleurisy depends an it's underlying causes, but left untreated can by itself cause serious complications.

All things considered you would not be over reacting or wasting your time to see your Doctor. Few problems, persisting several weeks rarely just resolve on their own and you will be left wondering when you will have another episode.

Please let me know if this helps, or you have more questions for me.
