I had a heart catheterization this past Thursday a week ago. the doc said my heart is fine no blockages. I still get the chest paid through the sternum bone between the shoulder blades and it radiates out to my left arm and sometimes the left side of my throat. It comes and goes and is sometimes sharp and severe. Someone told me it could be an onset of Shingles. I had chicken pox when I was young. Also I have been told I have a Hiatal hernia but it does not seem related to after eating or when I lie down. It can occur sitting up, standing, whenever.

Any other ideas I might have missed?

There are a number of reasons for chest pain.

1. Heart - angina or myocardial infarction will cause central crushing pain, often radiating upwards towards jaw and left arm. Clamminess, Shortness of breath, nausea, feelings of doom are also symptoms of an actute MI

Angina would occur periodically especially on exertion. A diagnosis of angina is usually made on a full history of when symptoms occur and what makes them better eg rest or Glyceryl trinitrate spray.

There are other conditions relating to inflammation of heart muscle/valves and walls which can cause central chest pain.

2. Lungs- inflammation of lining/muscles might cause central chest pain although usually associated with shortness of breath. Also a Pulmonary Embolism would cause chest pain and usually shortness of breath

3. Oesophagus/Stomach - problems with the digestive tract can cause central pain and discomfort. There are a number of different problems including oesphageal stricture, hiatus hernia, stomach ulcer to name a few. Pain on right side may also be related to liver.

As you can see there are a variety of possible causes so treatment recommendations cannot be made until we identify exact cause. Any chest pain needs to be seen by your doctor, speed of visit depends on intensity of pain. It sounds like angina has been ruled out however I would expect that you have already had an ECG and Echocardiogram?

Your description does not sound like typical shingles distribution. I would recommend a upper GI endoscopy as your next step to rule out a problem with acid reflux or esophageal stricture as these can sometimes present with the symptoms that you describe.

Reply to Pauline's Post: Went to a chiropractor they thought it was nerve impingement and today my MD confirmed that. He has prescribed muscle relaxants at bedtime and an anti inflammatory med. He pressed right on the nerve in my left neck region near the collar bone and I went through the roof and it intensified the pain I was having. So three cheers for the MD's and chiropractors who came to the same conclusion and whom both have helped me to lessen my pain.

Thanks agai for your response
