Question

I have extreme tightness in the center of my chest

Sent to Health Experts July 05, 2007 7:37 p.m.

Last night, I smoked methamphetamine, which I've done before. But this time I inhaled for longer and deeper than I think I have before, until I just couldn't inhale any longer, and I could feel some sort of snapping sensation in my chest. I guess I smoked quite a bit, although it's been about 10 hours and I don't feel the effects anymore, but I am left with the tightest, most painful chest. It started in the left side a few hours ago, and slowly radiated to the center. I have difficulty swallowing, and inability to cough (which I really feel I need to), and extreme shortness of breath. I do also have discomfort in my shoulders. I wonder if these are symptoms of angina. They do definitely mimic those of a heart attack, although I can't imagine an attack occurring for as many hours as it has. Each time I expel gas from my mouth, I am left with a crippling tightness for a few seconds, which then subsides to a prevalent extreme tightness that will not go away.

I took the two aspirin immediately before I posted my question, and I feel quite a bit of relief. How beneficial is aspirin for chest-related pain and tightness? Might this be a remedy?

aspiriin can thin the blood and help prevent heart muscle damage in a heart attack, but is in no way a treatment or cure. its possible if this is cardiac related that time alone helped and this could be an early warning for heart disease. the only thing aspirin would be treatment for when it comes to chest pain is if it is musculoskeltal and the aspriin is masking the pain somewhat, along with a mild antiinflammatory effect.
you still need to have the cardiac aspect ruled out asap.

Are there ever instances where chest pain is just accute and not related to any long-term or chronic diseases or health concerns? What would be the risk factors of not receiving medical attention for a sudden onset of chest pain if it does, in fact subside and not return?

Okay. Thank you very much. You have been very helpful. I guess the only thing left that I should add is that, while I obviously am unable to diagnose palpitations or arrhythmias, I feel quite certain that my heartbeat has been very irregular all day, sometimes to the point that I could feel three beats at a time, then none at all, then scattered and erratic ones. So that is obviously a cause for concern when chest pain is involved, correct? If you could just comment on this, I think I will be satisfied.
