Hi went to the Er 4 times in the last week with chest pain, shortness of breathe and lightheadiness. All 4 times the EKG, blood work and chest x-rays were normal. I also had a PFT and echocardigram. MY PFT said that I breathe 104% better with an inhaler through my large airways but my breathing was normal. The echo was good except that my aortic valve velocity is 109 instead of 107 but I was told that I have a strong heart and that this is nothing to worry about. I am still experiencing shortness of breathe and chest pain on and off. It is hard for me to get a good deep breath. I also can't sleep. I keeping waking up every hour. I just want to get some sleep. What is wrong with me?

My question is how do I know that it is an anxiety disorder and not a medical condition such as cancer? These could be symptoms of that also. My doctor wouln't talk to me until after she receives all these results which is driving me to worry more and more. I want some sleep! Would cancer show up in blood work? I just can't see someone having these symptoms everyday and this just be an axiety disorder. I have never had to go to the ER and rarely am ever sick and this is why I just don't understand what is going on here

You don't have any symptoms of cancer. We don't test for the majority of cancers with blood work. It takes a particular kind of blood test to look for cancer markers, but you don't have any of the symptoms, and you're 27 years old and admittedly in excellent health until this anxiety problem. As for how you know it's an anxiety disorder, you can trust the dozen or so physicians who have told you so. That's at least 150 years of study among them to know what is anxiety and what isn't.

If the diagnosis were depression, could you see how someone could have it every day? Anxiety is a similar problem. An imbalance in brain chemicals is there all the time until you take medicine to balance it.

For sleep you can take a couple of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) 30 minutes before bedtime. Melatonin from the pharmacy or health food store will also help relax you.
