I was wondering if chlamydia pnuemoniae could cause ms?
I went on a cruise 2 years ago and within 2 weeks of returning had multiple problems starting with vertigo, loss of balance and excessive tingling in my head. Dr. diagnosed me with a viral ear infection. symptoms continued for a couple more months so went back to him .... sentme to nuero, who finally diagnosed ms. have been having other strange symptoms since all this started such as ear infections with lasting pain in thatr one ear even after antibiotics. recently found out my husband has chlamydia pneumoniae in his system and am awaiting blood test results for me. there seems to be a link between ms and this bacteria . what is your opinoin and do you think we could have gotten this bacteria from the cruise???
                           thank you

Hi,

A lot of research has focussed on the role of chlamydia in causing MS, since it is long suspected that MS is an autoimmune disease and it si posible that certain antibodies that the body may produce during infections may cross-react with the myelin covering of the nerve cells leading to the disease.

Evidence of chlamydia infection has been found in some patients with MS,and it may be useful to test you fo rthe same.

Having said that, the evidence is by no means conclusive and its role in any therapy is controversial. So even if we are able to show that your problem was caused by chlamydia, it may not be able to alter your treatment very much, sincethe infection that may have caused these lesions is in the past.

The cause of chlamydia infection is also difficult to confirm at present, but sinc ethe symptoms started within 2 weeks of returning from the cruise, this would seem unlikely, it would generally take a lot longer for MS to occur after chlamydia infection (& remember that whether MA actually occurs after chlamydia has never been proven),
