Hello,

The commonest causes of a pinkish discharge during the menstrual cycle are:

- Missing one of the BCP pills. This will cause a decrease in the hormonal levels of the body and a mild bleeding cna occur.

- Vaginal infections - Inflamed vaginal walls can bleed and produce the pinkinsh discharge, especially after sex.

- Cervical polyp - This is a small harmless growth at the mouth of the cervix which usually do not cause much problems. If it causes bleeding however, it needs to be removed.

- Cervical erosion - This condition can occur in prolonged BCP use. The cells of the mouth of the cervix undergoes certain changes and can bleed.

Your girfriend need to be examined by an Ob-Gyn and these conditions ruled out.

I hope this helps.

thank you for the response. You have not mentioned anything about chlymidia, ghonerria or any other STD's. She recently had a 'routine' physical where they drew blood, but aren't these areas for concern? or would there be other symptoms present?

Hello,

Vaginal infections (which I had mentioned earlier) includes infections by chlamydia, gonorrhea or other STDs. But most STDs cause vaginal discharge which are foul smelling or cause itching.

A brown or pink discharge implies a mild bleeding - could be from ulcers or sores in the vaginal walls . An STD which can cause ulcers with mild bleeding is herpes infection. But these ulcers are extremely painful - since you did not mention pain, i assumed that your girlfriend does not have herpes infection. Also bleeding is very minimal, almost absent and is not enough to cause a constant pinkish discharge.

Chlamydia causes a very minimal vaginal discharge. Gonorrhea on the other hand causes a thick, purulent, foul smelling discharge. HPV infection will not cause bleeding or discharge. Syphilis causes no specific discharge either.

If her routine physical does not mention any specific pathology, I believe her bleeding could be either as a result of a missed BCP or a cervical erosion.

It is also possible that the amount of estrogen that she is receiving from the BCP is now no longer adequate for her and she needs to be on another brand of BCP.

I hope this helps.

you wrote, "chlamydia causes a very minimal vaginal discharge"-

1. would this be foul smelling?
2. would this have been detected during her routine physical recently?
3. the 'routine discharge' you mentioned, what characteristics would exist?

thank you.. you have been a great help, I will certainly up the donation when we are done...

thanks again.

please help me to fully understand what you are saying...

are you saying:
1. since my girlfriend had blood drawn at her exam, chylamdia would have shown up if it were there

OR

2. would she have had to ASK to specifically be tested for chylamdia...

thanks again for handling my concerns..
