I am currently taking antabuse for my drinking problem. I am having a plastic surgery preocedure in 6 weeks time and need to know if I should stop taking antabuse? Does antabuse interfere with having cosmetic surgery?

The medication can act with the anesthesia that you will be receiving during your surgery; it can add to the sedative effects of the anesthesia, as it acts on the central nervous system.

You should tell your doctor/anesthesia about this drug, and they will probably make you stop taking it one to two weeks prior to surgery.

Reply to Dr. Mark's Post: If I start taking the antabuse a couple of days after the surgery will it interfere with the recovery process or scarring?

no, it should not be a problem, but as always ask your surgeon if he has any concerns.
