Dear Darrell,

Cramping is a common problem with many possible causes. The first thing is to make sure it is not just from bad positioning (sleeping on your arms) or from using the computer too much (like with carpal tunnel syndrome). If this is not the cause then other things to consider are electrolyte levels (too much calcium, or too low potassium). Often is can be caused by medications, referred to as myalgias. the medication you are on, simvastatin (Zocor) is in a class of medications called statins that are notorious for causing myalgias. They usually are in the thighs but it is not unheard of to be in the arms or the legs. This may be what is going on and your doctor may ask you to stop the medication and see if that changes it --Don't do this on your own, discuss with your doctor first. If they improve, then it most likely was from this medication and your doctor can find other medications for you without this side effect./

Good luck to you,

Dr. J
