Question

Stomach pains during menstrual

Sent to Health Experts July 17, 2006 4:10 p.m.

Every month during my menstrual I have severe abdominal pains, and I can't seem keep anything down. I am 19 years old, in pretty good shape, except my doctor says I'm anemic. Does this have anything to do with my pains?

Thank you for your question, and my sympathy for your pain!

Your being anemic is unlike to have anything to do with bad cramping during menstraution. Unfortuantely some women are simply cursed with having horrible cramps during their menstrual cycle. Because yours sound particularly bad, you should go to your doctor and have things checked out.

One fairly common cause of severe cramping is a endometriosis.   An estimated 89 million women worldwide suffer from this disorder. Endometriosis occurs when the uterine lining, which is normally shed during a woman's period, is instead located ouside of the womb and in other parts of the body, normally the pelvic cavity. Your doctor can discuss various treatment options if it is determined you have this condition.

You may also benefit from being placed on a hormonal system, such as birth control pills. Many women with severe menstrual cramps find their cramps to be much milder when taking the pill.

Best of luck!

The pains are not cramps, they are stomach pains, and I cant keep food down. I have always had cramps the first day or so of my period, but these stomach pains have just started within the last couple of months

Thank you for the clarification.

If your symptoms only occur while you are menstruating, it could still be endometriosis - you may have only recently developed the condition. It is still unlikely that the stomach pains are related to being anemic.

If you cannot keep food down, and are at risk of becoming dehydrated or are running a high fever, you need to call your doctor immediately and/or go to the emergency room. Otherwise make an appointment to see him/her as soon as possible to get a full diagnosis.
