Are there any medications available which reduce flatulence?
Sent to Health Experts November 23 11:08 AM

I pass what I consider to be a more than normal amount of gas, and would like to reduce this. I should also mention that I have been diagnosed with a mild to moderate case of Chrons disease, that I am currently taking Asacol for this, and have annual colonoscopies. I am 47 years old, and in pretty good overall shape (5-11, approx. 182 lbs, exercise regularly, including skiing, fairly regular weight training and cardio work). I eat what I consider a pretty healthy diet, for example, lots of chicken, some fish, daily fruits and vegetables.
With all this, my flatulence seems excessive. Can you help? Thank you.

Male , Age: 47

Already Tried:
Not much - more asacol (which treats my Chrons disease)

Some vegetables can contribute to excess flatulence. So adjusting your choice of vegatbles can be helpful. The worst culprits are beans. The first thing I would try is peppermint tea after meals. This can be a help. You can also get concentrated peppermint oil capsules too but this may have an impact on your Crohn's.

Other things which can help are charcoal biscuits and tablets. They are a very old fashioned remedy which are hard to find but they absorb the gas. The disadvantage is that they turn your stools black which can be very alarming especially in people with intestine problems.

There is a lot of information about probiotic drinks and yogurts but as yet we have seen no clear scientific trials that allow us to recommend them as healthcare professionals but it may be something that you may want to try.

I can recommend antispasmodic drugs if you are getting cramping too. Let me know what else you need.

Pauline,

Thank you for your response, which I will certainly accept. However, I first want to ask a follow-up question (with two parts). What kind of vegetables would you recommend, and where can I get charcoal biscuits or tablets?

Thanks again, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Craig
