I have been told by my new dentist that I need peridontal planing. I just want a regular cleaning. I feel he is giving me a "hard sell." How do I judge if I really need this procedure ( timely and costly as it is.)?

Generally people have a 2-3 mm pocket and has little plaque or bleeding. If a person has 4-6 mm pockets, then those are the areas that a deep cleaning will benefit. Bacteria builds up and stay deep in those pockets and continue to cause damage. It is critical that those areas are periodically "disrupted" and the bacteria removed.
