A few months ago I changed dentists (mine retired). On my 1st visit, I showed him a bump way down on my lower gum under my eye tooth. He took an xray...looked like a blank black space to me...he seemed a little non-commital (which scared me a bit) & said he would send to the oral surgeon & call me w/ his thoughts. I left feeling scared. I waited & waited and then work took over & I figured it was nothing. Now I have a new white bump in same area closer to tooth. Every day I seem no better..a little flu like. Finally I called dentist...he never sent xray, a mix up. he sent on Friday. Since I am not in pain no drug. I made it through weekend with loads of C and a little advil...am running a low fever. Called dentist again and he is calling in prescription. What do you think is going on...is this related?

Neglected to tell you that I have had first bump for a couple years..feels almost like a smooth bone. I've done nothing because it did not bother me all that time. This new bump seems to be the problem. Penicillin ? is being called in to pharmacy.

It does sound as though you may have an infection, which this can lead to a canker sore. Of blister type bump which can pop with white pus and a bit of blood. Or if this is bone from previously as you indicate, then the pressure to the gums can also produce these white bumps. Antibiotics should help, but this tooth does need to be looked at, as it may need a deeper cleaning, which food particles and bacteria may be down in the gum line.

However just with the way the Dentist acted and lack of sending x ray off, is not a good way to start out with a new patient. Not sure of your situation, but perhaps you may want to get word of mouth from friends and family for a different dentist. (That part is my own personal observation)

If you don't feel any relief or see any change in the next 36-48 hours after stopping the antibiotics, then do be seen again.

Reply to Lindie's Post: Do you mean 36-48 hours after STARTING on Penicillin? In other words, at that point I should begin to feel better? Have not picked up prescription as yet. This new bump has been going on now for 2 weeks. Could I be in trouble because I waited too long?

Yes, 36-48 hours from when you start the antibiotics. (You should see and feel and improvement, if none or it gets worse, then be seen again. No major damage, other than an infection left untreated can cause further complications if left untreated for a long period of time. Sometimes these bumps can go away on their own, by using peroxide, and even some people will use a q-tip and pop them to relieve the pressure, but until the infection is cleared up, they will usually return in 24-48 hours.

So you should be fine in the long term, but still need to find out what is causing the infection at this point.

Hope this helps Hun
