canker sore and other mouth sores
Sent to Health Experts March 13 06:09 PM

Just recently I developed a medium size canker sore on my lower lip on the left side. I've never had one before. Shortly afterward, I noticed a small red bump on the roof of my mouth near the back. The roof of my mouth is also lightly colored. I can't remember what color the roof of your mouth is supposed to be. Also, just after the canker sore, a few small white bumps appeared on the bottom of my tongue, and one on the tip. My gums have been swollen and sometimes bleed when I brush my teeth. I have no idea what this could be, and all this happening at once is worrying me. I have gone to a doctor about the canker sore, but she diagnosed it as a cold sore which ended up being completely wrong.I want to go to another doctor to see what all this is, but my insurance only covers the one. The canker sore is slowly going away after being treated with Adcortyl from orabase. The sore on the roof of my mouth is still there and shows no signs of leaving. Are all these symptoms somehow connected?

Also, I just visited my dentist in january and my gums and everything were perfectly healthy. I always brush 2 times a day, and i've never had a cavity. Does gingivitis occur that quickly?

I'm studying abroad in England right now and I will not be able to see a dentist because my insurance will not cover it. It sounds like the Adcortyl could be causing the inflammation of the gums. I'm on the last day of the treatment because it was indicated in the directions not to use for 5 days for risk of it entering the blood stream. Is this a sign of it entering the blood stream? If not, what signs should I look for? Also, would I need to seek a treatment to get the steriod OUT of my bloodstream, or will it leave on its own? Also, about the canker sore, everytime i take a shower the "scab" over it is washed away and the ulcer is exposed. I don't think this is good for the healing process. What is a good way to keep the sore sealed up?

If you are in England you can see a dentist for about £25 for an initial consultation. Most dentists in the UK are private rather than NHS so most people have to pay, but you should be able to see any local dentist as a temporary resident if you explain. There may be one attached to your college or university.

Using a steroid paste for a few days should not normally cause bleeding of gums. Ask your pharmacist for Corsodyl mouthwash to help with that. As the paste is topical the amount entering the systemic circulation should be minimal.

There is a mouthwash called Difflam which may also be helpful as it is anti-inflammatory. I usually recommend it for sore throats but it can help ulcerative conditions too.

Compeed have brought out new 'plaster' for coldsores. This you can use as a second skin over the canker sore. You may need to go to larger branch of BootsThe Chemist to get it. Otherwise use Vaseline as a barrier.

When you go into Boots, ask to speak to the pharmacist and show him/her your mouth that will get you a second opinion.

Regards
