Molar tooth
Sent to Health Experts August 10 06:10 AM

Hello,
I have had a partially erupted molar in the bottom right of my mouth for the past 2 years, with no problems. but now the said tooth has restarted in its effort to fully erupt, and has started to push through my gums, causing pain and swelling in my cheek. It started on Tuesday, and since i have been in pain. The gum was originally covering the majority of the tooth, but now it is covering about 1/5 of the tooth so it seems to be retracting.
There seems to be room in my mouth, it is not overly rubbing on my gums or cheek. Will this heal itself in a few days? Unfortunately i am in Japan, and due to the language barrier and public holidays for the next week, i am unable to seek help. I have been taking painkillers and sometimes rinsing with warm salt water.

Thanks
Paul

Dear Paul,
I had the opinion of a professional colleague who is a dentist in your case,
and here is his opinion...
A partially erupted tooth like the one you are describing needs to be taken out,as soon as possible, since this is likely to keep on giving you trouble otherwise...
However given your present circumstances this may not be possible,
Use of the strongest possible painkiller that you can lay yoreu hands on either OTC or as per prescription, should help you...
A local anesthetic teething gel may provide some temporary relief,
Some steps you can also take to control your pain include:
  • Thoroughly cleaning all parts of your mouth and teeth; don't avoid painful areas
  • Using warm water to brush your teeth
  • Using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth
All the best,
regards
Dr. Gupta
