Hello and Welcome to Just Answer,

I need to ask you a couple of questions in order to answer your question sufficiently.

When did you have your extraction?

Did the dentist give you any antibiotics or pain relievers before or after your extraction?

Are you having any swelling?

Any fever?

Any drainage from the area of extraction?

Thanks,
Pam Russell RN

Hello,
I had the extraction 2 months ago, the roots were left. She advised ibuprofin and she has tried 3 lots of antibiotics, each has easied the pain while on them but as soon as they finish the pain is back.I have been to my dentist 3 times over this problem.

I have no swelling, but there is a 'taste' in my mouth. I can not eat on the side of the hole, and when I eat on the other side food transferes to the hole and causes a very sharp pain as it gets stuck in the hole.

I have been refered to the hospital but the earliest appointment is on the 18th december, the hospital said I can get an emergency appointment but my dentist is being reluctant as she says she has never heard of this scenario and that unfortunatly I should just take a painkiller.

Help!
Regards,
Nicola.

Is the dentist you see a General Dentist or did an oral surgeon take out the tooth? Also do you smoke? What are they planning on doing at the hospital? Has your dentist ever mentioned anything about a dry socket? Can you tell me what the taste is that you are experiencing?

After the removal of a tooth, if you don't keep the socket dry and covered, then you will develop what is called a dry socket. Usually people who smoke will develop this after an extraction. A dry socket is very painful and the dentist will go back in to repair this. Usually an oral surgeon has more knowledge about this. You might try and contact an oral surgeon and see if he would look at your situation. It may could be fixed without having to go to the hospital. If you have anymore questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks,
Pam Russell RN
