Tongue Lump

Sent to Health Experts June 08 11:45 AM

I am in need of a dental expert. I have lump on my tongue, I've attached a link to a picture (I hope you are allowed to view). It's magnified in a mirror, it's much smaller than what it appears. I am very concerned because it's been 3 days now. Any idea of what it could be? How long should I wait before going to see a dr, should I wait a couple of more days to see if it goes away? http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=80388727&imageID=810082075&MyToken=f34581e9-2533-4037-9dca-8455afc231e9

Hello Sheri,

Unfortunately, the link will not open. Can you describe the lump? Is it perhaps a canker sore?

Here are some pictures that may be helpful, please let me know if you have further questions:

Sheri, I have practiced in dentistry for over 25 years. What you have appears to be a fibroma. This is often a benign lump that can come on from trauma, bite or for no apparent reason at all. Typically they resolve on there own in a few weeks or less. Some can last months. I checked you web profile and I see you do smoke or drink, so I feel you are at very minimal risk for this to be oral cancer. I see you are checking you sight even few minutes so I am answering this because I have to leave and you appear very anxious. If you have any other questions, I will return 5pm EST.

Reply to Marie's Post: Thank you. No, I never have smoked or drinked. I orignally thought this was a bug bite but I don't know if that is possible on the tongue. It appeared in the past two days so I don't think it would be a malignant lump since it grew so fast but the soreness is going away. I was also concerned about std's (I'm a bit of a hypochondriac) but am at very low risk for anything and this is not a sore more of a lump. Anyway, thanks for your input, I will wait a few more days and see how things are.

Sheri, I'm sure this is nothing to worry about. Some times they can even occur with rough sex play. So, no it is not an STD, it will resolve on its own.

Reply to Marie's Post: Thank you very much, it's nice to have someone to put your mind at ease. The strange thing is that by tonight most of the swelling is gone and it's starting to disappear so very strange. Anyway, I think I'll just let it go and if it happens again I will get it checked out. Thanks again.
