Question

sex

Sent to Health Experts July 19, 2006 7:58 a.m.

I am a 33 year old woman who used to be very sexual. Shortly after I got pregnant with my son (my only child) my desire was slowly diminishing. Now I don't have any desire to have sex. Not with my husband or anyone else. Maybe once a month I get the urge to masturbate but then it's gone again. Could this be due a depression problem that I haven't been to a doctor for yet? Or is it something else?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 33

Already Tried:
nothing other than giving into my husband so he doesn't think i'm cheating on him.

Yes it could very well be due to depression and if you have been having periods of mood swings this can also be a sign of depression as well. It could also have something to do with hormonal changes as well so you might want to consider any other changes you have been experiencing as well to help narrow down whether it could be related to depression or hormonal changes. If this has been going on for longer than three months it is more likely it could be do to depression then some hormonal changes. You should talk with your physician and let them know what is going on and see if an anti-depressant would be good for you. The one with the lowest amount of side effects is Zoloft so this is one to consider. But if this has just started it could be due to some hormonal changes so give it a little longer to see if they straighten up on their own.

It has been going on for about 2 1/2 years. It just seems to be getting worse rather then better. I have heard that using a natural antidepressant rather than meds might help too. St. John's wort seems to be what everyone says I should try first before meds. It is safe? Might it help?

Yes that as well as Black Cohish are both great. I would recommend that you try these first and see if they are a help to you before trying regular prescription medication and you might find that these help to balance out your moods. It is safe and for alot of people they do help without the need for regular traditional medication. Try this for one or two months to allow yourself to begin to feel the full effects and then if they are not helpful you should speak with your physician about a regular anti-depressant. Especially if this has been going on for over two years.
