Getting Use To Medications

Sent to Health Experts March 28 05:36 PM

I've been given Amitriptyline HCL to help with my insomia and depression problem. I really love this medication but the problem is that I get use to it. I started at 25MG but after 3 weeks I had to up the dosage to 50MG. After a month at that dosage I'm getting use to it again. Although it still somewhat helps with my sleeping problem I find that I'm even more depressed in the daytime then I was before taking it. I was wondering how high of dosage can you go and won't I just get use to that dosage as well? I've tried several other medications just for the depression problem but after taking them for afew weeks I get use to them and it actually makes me feel more depressed as well. I try to tell my doctor at the VA that I have a problem of getting use to medications but they don't me even though I told them about my friend that has to rotate between several medications because he has the same problem.

Although I got use to the medication doseage that I'm taking for the depression side of it it still makes me very sleepy and if I start taking it in the daytime(I only take it at bedtime at the moment) I'm going to have a problem with being tired.

I have one more thing I forgot to mention. That medication actually does 3 things. 1. It helps with depression. 2. It helps me sleep. 3. I developed a bad itching/hive problem back in Sept when I went on disability for my sleeping problem and this medication also helps with the stress so I don't have that problem. When the medicine starts to losee its effect the itching problem is starting to come back but not the hives yet. I was diagnosed by the allergy dept at the VA as to stress causing me to have hives.

I talked with my doctor regarding the problem with me getting use to the medication and he told me to increase the dosage to 100MG starting today.
I don't know what good thats going to do if I just get use to it in another month.
