cheryl1958,

Yes- It can begin days, weeks, or months after delivery. It isn't exactly known what causes postpartum depression, but it is thought that the dramatic shifts in hormone levels during pregnancy and immediately afterward may result in chemical changes in the brain leading to the condition. During pregnancy there are also factors that increase a woman's risk of developing postpartum depression. These include a history of depression or substance abuse, family history of mental illness, little support from family and friends, anxiety about the fetus, problems with previous pregnancy or birth, marital or financial problems, and a young age.
