Poor baby (and it isn't much easier on you, I am sure!).

The diarrhea may be from the antibiotics. Once someone is on them for a while, especially when they have been switched from one to another, the normal organisms in the gut get knocked out of commission. These are the "good" bacteria that help to provide for digestion. When these good guys get knocked out, the bad guys take over. this often includes the clostridium difficile germ - called "C diff" by most of us, because we know him too well! He should have stool cultures sent to the lab along with a specimen marked specifically to check for this C diff.

There are meds that can be given to correct the stool flora - such as probiotics, yogurt, acidophillus, and the real meds like vancomycin by mouth and flagyl by mouth. These will generally imrove things within a couple of days when given every 6 hours.

The vac is a good thing - it really helps to drain the wound and encourage the blood supply to return.

The bleeding is not good of course. This may be due to the sepsis - there is a dysfunction of the clotting mechanism with sepsis and that can cause the bleeding to be a slow continuous ooze from various parts of the body - stomach, bowels, and any small cut or puncture that we add to the skin.

Paleness is either from blood loss or from anemia from the chronic illness. Of course he is weak as he is spending all his energy in healing wounds. The depression is certainly something that can be treated if he is able to have pills through a feeding tube.

Was there anything else in partiular that I can answer for you tonight?

Tommy was diagnoised with sepsis in July, since then all this has happened, they say the sepsis is gone, but they haven't done any blood cultures and everyday something new shows up. they never even knew that he had clots in his tummy til I pointed out that his incision was bleeding. Can the sepsis still be there, are these symtoms a part of the sepsis?

Tommy was born with Spina Bifida plus various other problems. He has always taken care of himself, he dresses himself, he feeds himself, and he goes to the bathroom on his own, he is in a wheelchair. On June 27th he was taken to the hospital, he was so swollen he couldn't even get into his wheelchair. A few hours later he went into cardiac arrest, and was put in a drug induced coma and transferred to a better hospital. He was started on antibiotics, plus they did a trekeotomy on him and put a feeding tube in. He was diagnoced with sepsis. After about a week he was transferred to another hospital, and the feeding tube got moved out of place. He then had to have surgery on his tummy because paratenitus was found. 2 weeks ago he was eating, talking, very alert and ready to come home. Now he has the VAC on his tummy, he has had diareah, he doesn't eat and all he wants to do is sleep. He has a talky piece in so he can talk while he is off the resperator, but all he wants to do is sleep. They say the sepsis is gone, but everyday something new pops up. Last week they gave him 2 units of blood because his hemoglobin was low, now it is at 9.2 and they say he is fine. So what do I do, what do I ask them what am I to think, is he going to be ok or is he not? What all can be wrong with him?
