my husband has been ill for some months now and although he has seen two consultants who have gone through his history and put a tube down his nose to examine his throat they have said they can find nothing wrong with him. he has lost a lot of weight with worry. his symptoms are a feeling that something is stuck in his throat and a continual gagging and bringing up white thick spittle. he finds it difficult to eat because of this feeling. he has also in march had a stent put in his artery, he has a hiatus hernia, and he also has an underactive thyroid. he takes nystatin, clopidrel, a beta blocker and zopiclone to sleep. any suggestions please. valerie croxson

Hello, Valerie,

One of the most common reasons for the feeling that something is stuck in the throat is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Treatment is with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) such as Protonix (pantoprazole), Prilosec/Losec (omeprazole), Nexium (esomeprazole), Prevacid (lansoprazole), etc. Practitioners generally rule out other things. If it is necessary, they will run a test called an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in which a small camera is passed down the throat through the esophagus and stomach to the duodenum to see if there is anything else going on that is concerning.

At least one of the PPIs (omeprazole, Losec) is available at your chemist without a prescription. It usually takes 2 weeks to see an improvement.
