I am 66 years old, female with diabetes. The last two weeks I have been walking funny. Even my daughter noticed it. I will start walking and without my wanting to go faster my speed picks up rapidly and I have to catch onto a poll or literally run into a wall.   This happens every time I get up to walk inside or outside. Thank you. ickessharoXXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Hi,
By what you are describing it does not seem like parkinson's. In parkinson's one has a shuffling gait. The hallmorks of Parkinson's dieases are -
  • Rigidity -- stiffness when the arm, leg or neck is moved back and forth
  • Resting Tremor -- tremor most prominent at rest, when sitting quietly
  • Bradykinesia -- slowness in initiating movement
  • Loss of postural reflexes -- patients have poor balance and may fall
By what you are describing it seems like you are having diabetic neuropathy. In this the nerves of the body are affected due to long standing diabetes. There are various types of diabetic neuropathy. You might be having proximal neuropathy. For a proper diagnosis a detailed examination and investigation is required. I would advise you to see your Endocrinologist as soon as possible. Also you need to keep your blood sugars under control. In the meantime donot venture out on your own and always wear some protective footwear even if you are at home.
