Sent to Health Experts March 02, 2007 9:15 p.m.

My father has lost his strength in his hands and leg and is unable to walk. In November 2005 he had his left lower leg amputated do to diabeties. His test results show that his blood is okay, there are no signs of heart attack, or stroke. His appetite is good. He does not have any strength. My mother has to bath, dress, and almost feed him. The doctor told him he has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. When I looked up the symptons of CFS he did not have the any of them. What do you think could be happening to him?

Hello,

It is possible that your father has lost strength in his arms and legs due to a condition known as periphearal neuropathy. This is a condition where the nerves of the limbs are affected by diabetes and do not function to their fullest capacity.

Once the nerves are damaged, they fail to stimulate the muscles . As a result the muscles may even begin to waste away.

While some people have tingling and numbness of the limbs, the more severe variety can cause complete loss of function , as in your father.

To know more about diabetic neuropathy and how it is treated, please see:

It is unlikely that your father has chronic fatigue syndrome since in this condition, there is no weakness of the muscels as such, but severe fatigue makes the sufferer wish to lie down and not do any work.

I hope this helps.
