My fingers began moving involuntarily from zyprexa use and now I have Peripheral Neuropathy. Can one develop Perpheral Neuropathy without having Diabetes. I gained 60 pounds.

Optional Information:
Female, Age: 60, Florida

Already Tried:
I went to a DO and a Neurologist and neither could give me any idea what caused the neuropathy. I believe it is from Xyprexa, having taken it for at least 6 years.

Yes, there are many causes of peripheral neuropathy including any of the following:

  • Physical injury or trauma
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disorders
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Vitamin deficiences
  • Alcoholism
  • Blood vessel damage or disease
  • Connective tissue disorders/chronic inflammation
  • Cancers and benign tumors
  • Repetitive stress
  • Toxins, or use of certain medications
  • Infections
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Genetic disorders/mutations

Antipsychotic drugs, especially Zyprexa, are very well known to cause neuropathy and tics and tremors, and the longer you take it, the more likely this is to occur.

At this point, CT scans, MRI, EMG, nerve conduction and biopsies, and even skin biopsies are advised to determine the cause of your condition, and there are a variety of treatments available for it depending on the cause, including lifestyle and medication changes, medication treatment, mechanical aides, and surgical intervention. I hope this helps!
