I recently had an auto accident as the result of a diabetic siezure. I had checked my blood sugar level about an hour before and it was 125. What can I do to insure that this doesn't happen again?

Reply to A. Alexander, MD's Post: I have been diabetic for several years and have recently been experiencing serious "lows". My wife has called the EMS on a couple of occasions when she couldn't revive me or remember how to use the glucose infusion device. These occasions have been while I was sleeping. Usually while awake I can feel the symptoms and eat something. On this occasion I awoke after hitting a guard rail, was several miles from where I should have been and had no idea how I got there.

I am not currently on an insulin pump. I understand that there are pumps that give a continuous glucose readout and can even give alerts when levels go beyond preset threshold points. This may be the solution to my concern. The paramedics checked me at the scene but by that time I had eaten and my glucose level was up.

W,

Okay. So you passed out and you are pretty sure it was low sugar. Let's suppose you are correct. In the meantime, you should avoid skipping meals and keep some juice in your car. I hope you are checking your glucose 4 times a day. Since your glucose runs low, perhaps you don't need any insulin at all? Some people can control diabetes with diet alone.

In the meantime, keep a log of your accuchecks so your physician can tailor your treatment to your eating habits.
