Yesterday I was cutting something with my kitchen scissors ...
Sent to Health Experts November 08 08:22 AM

Yesterday I was cutting something with my kitchen scissors and the tip went straight in just above the second knuckle. It continued to bleed rather heavily for about 5 minutes then stopped. Last night I noticed some brusing under the skin around the cut area and it was tender to the touch. This morning the lower knuckle is very sore and is swollen. I should add I just received a tetanus shot less than 2 weeks ago because it had been 10 years since my last booster. I just worry if this is something I need to be concerned about. I can bend the thumb but it is sore. Thank you for your help.

Reply to haloprecious's Post: Yes, I have type 2 diabetes and my levels are usually between 90=120, this morning it was 111.
My tetanus shot was going to lapse in December but because I was at my 3 month check with my pcp and would not see her again until February she wanted me to get it in November.

Thanks for your replies. They have been helpful.

Good to know that
  1. your diabetes is under control and
  2. 10 years hadn't lapsed since your last tetanus shot
Snce your diabetes is under control, the wound is likely to heal normally. The tetanus immunity similarly should be fair since there wasn't any gap.
Some soreness is normal in the wound and to deal with you can take antiinflammatory medication like Advil or Ibuprofen twice a day for about 3 days.
This will reduce the soreness.

Also take care to keep the area clean. You can apply an antibiotic based ointment on it 2-3 times a day. Avoid touching the area with unclean fingers or articles (cloth). Wash your hand with soap before cleaning the area or applying medicine. Similarly the wipes or clothes used to clean should be untouched. This should be enough.

Another important thing, avoid using antibiotic ointments which have steroids in them.
You'd need to consult a doctor if the wound doesn't heal or is very slow in healing and also if you are on any steroid medication.

Hope this was useful. Please click on accept if it was. If it wasn't let me know if you have further questions or need more input. Thanks.
