Black, tarry stools sometimes called melena, is usually caused by blood in the upper gastrointestional tract. This can include the stomach, esphagus, or first part of the small intestine. The blood can take on the appearance of black tar after it mixes with the bodies digestive juices. Stomach ulcers can be common with cases of upper GI bleeding but it is important that you be seen by your physcian so they can determine where exactly the blood is coming from and the cause so they can determine the best course of treatment. They will need to do a fecal occult test and possibly a endoscopy to help determine the area and cause.
