My fiance has recently had several bouts of diarrhea (also associated with mildly severe stomach pain) in the last few months, and we assumed he had developed an intolerance to dairy products (he loves milk and ice cream!). Just in the last couple of months he's been very irritable and moody, sometimes snapping at people for no reason. He also complains quite frequently of his stomach hurting and his nerves being "shot". Two major things have happened in the last couple months -- we found out his mother and stepdad are moving away to Idaho (and it happened very fast) and at the end of March we had a new baby (we already had a 20-month-old at home). The kids do not seem to be what is causing his stress, as he is usually the happiest when he is around them. Just today he went to the doctor and they gave him a questionaire which ultimately led to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Does this sound right to you? He does not seem to be extreme, the way most people we've known who are bipolar are -- could there possibly be another explanation for his symptoms... possibly related to the frequent diarrhea/abdominal pain he's been experiencing?

Relist: I still need help.
I did not really understand the first sentence in the answer I received. As for the diarrhea end of it, I already knew what was posted in my answer and was looking for any other alternative to tie all of these symptoms together.

Hi Daisy,

My name is Steve. I also answer health questions here on JustAnswer.

I suspect that your fiancé's stomach problems are due to lactose intolerance -- a disorder which affects many adults. Its cause is the lack of a digestive enzyme, called lactase, which is necessary to be able to digest the lactose (a.k.a. milk sugar) present in many dairy products -- including milk and ice cream. Lactose intolerance is easily managed with an over-the-counter 'dairy digestive enzyme' product -- containing lactase. Just have him pop a couple of those pills just before eating ice cream or drinking milk.

Regarding his irritability -- having two of your favorite foods suddenly start to give you indigestion on a regular basis, is enough to make anyone irritable. When you add on the stress involved with his parents suddenly deciding to move to another state (even though Idaho is very nice -- I lived there for 40 years) -- and, and also add in the (good) stress of a new baby (which probably means less-than-normal sleep) and even a Saint would be irritable.

While it is certainly possible that your fiancée may have some sort of emotional disorder -- and it is true that not all people with bipolar disorder have extreme mood swings -- I can tell you that bipolar disorder has developed a reputation for being over-diagnosed.

I would recommend that you see what a few bowls of ice cream (without an accompanying upset stomach) and a few good night's sleep (when that becomes feasible) do for your fiancé's irritability -- before you buy into the bipolar diagnosis.

I also recommend that you plan a trip to visit his folks in Idaho -- if you tell me which area they are in, I can tell you what to expect when you get there.

Let me know if you need more input. If not, thanks for the opportunity to assist you... Please honor my efforts by Clicking the green 'Accept' button (located within this post -- above-right). Adding a bonus -- should you wish to do so -- would be warmly welcomed.

Good Luck!

Steve
