Hello there, I have in the past taken something called

Sent to Health Experts June 08, 2006 3:07 p.m.

Hello there,

I have in the past taken something called Florastor, when I've had gas problems in the large intestine. It has always worked well. ( Florastor is lyophilized saccharomyces boulardi).

However, I have gastritis right now and Florastor irritates my stomach. Would there be any harm in opening a capsule, mixing it with a little water, and taking it rectally?

Thank you

Hi, Unfortunately you can not take Florastor thru the rectum because it will not work. Florastor is a yeast in a spor form. In order this yeast to be effective and do its job, it has to pass thru digestive tract. The capsule dissolves in the stomach and releases the yeast cells within 30 minutes of ingestion. The cells are spread throughout the small and large intestines creating a barrier in your gut against "bad" bugs. It helps the good organisms in your body to grow and protect your intestines against "bad" organisms that can make you unwell.
