My wife woke up tonight feeling bad. She was burping ...

Sent to Health Experts June 10, 2006 1:34 a.m.

My wife woke up tonight feeling bad. She was burping and having spit build up in her mouth like she was going to throw up, but never felt like she was going to throw up. She also has a pain in the area around her ears that extends down into her jaw. Her stomach is burning and she also had an adnormal black colored stool earlier this evening. Finally her back hurts too, she says it feels like she ate something that got stuck halfway down.

We wonder if this is something worth going to the ER in the middle of the night for, or if it's something to wait and see how she feels in the morning and then go to a medi-quick type place if she feels the need.

She's been awake for about an hour now and her symptoms have lessoned in strength, but she is still experiencing them.

As a side note, she recently gave birth to twin boys (seven weeks ago) and is currently nursing them. We would have actually probably just gone to the ER already, but with a 3 year old and the infant twin boys at home it's not easy to just get up and leave.

One other thing is that her father recently had a heart attack, so we know there is a family history of heart disease and are worried that her symptoms are heart related.

It could be related to her gallbladder, acid reflux or her colon either one. If she had a black tarry stool that is usually the sign of bleeding in the upper digestive tract. If her symptoms have lessened since taking the Pepcid and Mylanta I would monitor her for now but she should be seen since this is out of the ordinary for her and with the presense of a black stool it can be the sign of blood in the intestional tract so she should not put this off longer then tomorrow morning. If she seems to worsen then yes she should be seen right away as this could be the sign of colonitis and can become serious without treatment with Cipro or another strong antibiotic. I think the pain she is having in her ears and jaw is different from the stomach issue but should be addressed as well no later then in the morning as I can understand it would be hard to take all of your little ones out late tonight but monitor her closely for any signs of worsening, it does not sound heart related but should be addressed. They should do a fecal occult test and bloodwork to check for any abnormalities.

Could the pain in her back where it feels like something is "stuck" be related to the conditions you listed in your answer?

The stomach discomfort is secondary to the pain in her back, as well as the pain in her jaw and saliva that kept building up.

The gallbladder or colon can cause pain radiating to the back as well so this could also be related to either of these conditions. The saliva buildup would sound more related to possible acid reflux but a problem anywhere in the intestional tract can cause this as well so yes this could also relate to the colon or gallbladder. It sounds as though it could be related more to her colon to me and could be colonitis so that is why you should monitor her closely for any worsening which would be a sign that immediate care is needed. If the pain in her back worsens any at all I would go ahead and have her seen tonight to be on the safe side.

You are so very welcome and this does not sound heart related it does sound more intestional tract related. It can become serious if not tended to but I feel as long as she does not seem to have an increase in pain she should be okay until morning but should she worsen make sure and do take her in. I wish you all the very best of luck and know it can be alot of work with new twins but make sure she does take it easy as to not overdue herself either which will not help her condition at all.
